It is inevitable to gain weight if you’re having a baby. You need that extra padding to help your body carry a live and healthy baby to term. For many new moms, however, a major concern is how they can lose weight after pregnancy.

The simple answer is for you to be patient. You can’t simply waltz into the gym a week after giving birth and perform intensive exercises and restrict yourself to a severe fad diet. Whatever those Hollywood moms tell you about the fastest way to lose weight after pregnancy, don’t believe them.

Time Does the Trick

It took your body nine entire months to get there; it will also probably take that long for you to lose weight after pregnancy. If you’re a new mom and you’re wondering why you still look as though you’re still a few months before your due date, that’s because your uterus takes around a month before it shrinks back to its original size. During this time, you will also shed off up to 20 pounds as your body gets rid of all the additional fluid that was produced during pregnancy. Your hips and your pelvis take a longer time, but they will eventually go back to their original size before you became pregnant.

Tips to Lose Weight After Pregnancy

If your body was in tiptop shape before the pregnancy and you gained the recommended 25 to 35 additional pounds to support your baby, you can expect it to go back to how it was after giving birth. However, if you packed on more weight than you were supposed to, you have to work to lose weight after pregnancy so you don’t run the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disorders and other related health problems associated with a high body mass index.

Patience, again, is a virtue. To lose weight after pregnancy, you have to listen to your post-pregnancy body and be sure that it gets what it needs and not those that it doesn’t. You have to wait at least two months before you can really get back to business and do some serious workouts. In the meantime, here are several healthy ways to help you lose weight after pregnancy.

1. Breastfeed. Your body created several pounds of fat reserves that will be used for breastfeeding your baby. You can actually burn up to 500 calories everyday by breastfeeding alone. It also gives you an excuse to add an extra snack of 300 calories to your diet, but be sure you don’t treat it as an excuse to eat anything you want.

2. Eat healthy. Contrary to popular belief, you’re not going to lose weight after pregnancy if you don’t eat. Your body needs the proper amount of nutrients to help itself recover from the major ordeal of pregnancy and childbirth. A healthy, balanced diet is best for everybody, especially new moms.

3. Stock up on superfoods. Superfoods are those that contain the biggest amount of vitamins and minerals. Fatty fish like tuna, salmon, and mackerel are examples of superfoods because they are extremely abundant in fatty acids that have a lot of health benefits, including weight loss.
