In the first trimester, you must gain between one to five pounds and one pound per week throughout the rest of your pregnancy. This will result in the optimal health and growth for your baby.
  • If you were considered underweight before pregnancy for your height (BMI below 18.5) you are recommended to gain at least 28 to a maximum of 40 pounds.
  • If you were overweight before pregnancy for your height (BMI of 25 to 29.9), you should gain at least 15 to a maximum of 25 pounds. If you were obese for you height (a BMI of 30 or higher), you must gain between 11 to 20 pounds.
  • When having twins, you should gain at least 37 to 54 pounds if you were at a healthy weight for your height before pregnancy, 31 to 50 pounds if you were overweight for your height and a total of 24 to 42 pounds if you were considered obese.

Staying at your recommended weight based on your BMI will greatly affect the health and growth of your baby. Make sure that you eat healthy during your pregnancy, only indulging in cravings once in awhile. Also, you only need about 300 extra calories a day in order to support your baby even less during your first trimester. This means you should not necessarily eat double your normal serving size. These guidelines are important as studies have shown the risks involved with gaining too much above the recommended pregnancy weight.
