The best pregnancy test is one that checks for pregnancy most accurately. Unfortunately, there is very little scientific evidence to show us just what exactly the best pregnancy test kit is. When it all comes down to it, what you buy and use is still entirely up to you. After all, buying and using a pregnancy test kit, while it may sound pretty matter-of-fact, is a very emotional affair. That moment when you sit on top of the toilet lid and wait for an eternity for the results can be particularly dreadful.

The Best Pregnancy Test Brand

This is no scientific test, but based on a report by Nancy Metcalf, a senior editor at Consumer Reports, the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test was found out to be the most reliable and sensitive among all pregnancy test kits. They were able to figure out what the best pregnancy test brand was by using different pregnancy tests and following the instructions on their labels.

Home pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of a hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. hCG is produced once the placenta begins to develop, that is, on the day the embryo is implanted into the uterus. As a pregnancy progresses, the level of hCG in your body also increases. This is why it is easier to detect a pregnancy a little later. The best pregnancy test kit, First Response, can detect as little as 6.5 mlU/ml of hCG, the amount that is produced on the day of implantation itself.

It doesn’t mean, though, that the least sensitive home pregnancy tests, those that cannot detect below 100 mlU/ml,were not able to detect pregnancies. A lot of the time, the researchers had come up with reliable results by waiting a little longer than the prescribed waiting time in the kit’s label. Other brands that vie for second best pregnancy test are ClearBlue Easy and Answer Quick & Simple.

Urine or Blood Test?

Before this paragraph, we were talking about the best pregnancy test kit that you can use at home. This kind of home kits check for hCG levels in your urine while you wait for a specified number of minutes for the results. Once you get a positive on your home pregnancy test, you shouldn’t hesitate to visit your doctor for a more reliable pregnancy test – a blood test that can detect levels of hCG that not even the best pregnancy test kit can find out.

There are two types of blood tests for hCG: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative hCG tests check for the presence of hCG in the blood, while quantitative hCG tests measure exactly how much hCG there is in your blood. This means that even when there is a miniscule amount of the hormone in your blood which cannot be found out by the best pregnancy test kits at home, a quantitative hCG test can still determine whether you’re pregnant or not. While most home pregnancy tests work best at least two weeks after ovulation, a quantitative blood test for hCG can find out six to six to eight days earlier.
